Background: Visnews filmed London Airport June 18 as Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh took off the Comet 4 jet airliner to begin their six-week tour of Canada.
The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret came from a house party at Royal Lodge, Windsor, to board the plane for a short time and make their farewells.
As the departing Comet rose into a clear London summer sky on its 2,300-mile nonstop flight to Newfoundland there were reports from RTorbay Airport - its destination near St. John's - of low cloud and poor visibility.
Preparations were made for an alternative landing at the US naval air base of Argentia - 90 miles from Torbay - and the co-ordinator of the tour, Lt. General Howard Graham, said he would stand by at Argentia, possibly with Canadian Premier Diefenbaker.
Later the weather at Torbay airport cleared up and the Comet carrying the Royal visitors was able to land as scheduled at 7 pm BST.
The Queen's tour of Canada will be highlighted by the official opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and will take Her Majesty as far up north as Dawson in the Yukon Territory.
