Background: Condorde, the Anglo-French supersonic aircraft, flew to Paris yesterday (Wednesday) to join the air show and for the first time the world's two supersonic aircraft were seen together. The Soviet Union's Tupolov 144 had arrived the day before to make its first appearance in the West. After Concorde landed the two aircraft were parked near each other for a time highlighting the striking similarity of the two designs.
Reuter reported that on the first nose-to-nose encounter the Russian aircraft drew a bigger crowd but this was partly because it was its first western appearance.
Concorde flew in from the West African city of Dakkar, where it had been ??? on a test flight.
Although the United States is not in the supersonic airliner race it has the biggest foreign display at the air show. One of its star attractions is the Lookheed C-5A Galaxy, the world's biggest aircraft, which can carry 700 troops.
The Paris show is the world's biggest international shop window for aircraft and missile manufactures. It was officially opened today.
SYNOPSIS: Concorde, the Anglo-French supersonic aircraft, arrived in Paris on Wednesday to take part in the Paris air show. This was the first of the two prototypes already flying and is designated 001. It had been to Dakar in Senegal on the first of its long-distance proving flights.
The arrival of the Concorde aroused considerable interest at Le Bourget airfield as this was the first time the world's two supersonic aircraft - the Concorde and the Russian TU 144 - would be seen together. The designer of the Russian Aircraft, Alexei Tupolev said the world market was big enough for both his aircraft and the Concorde. The two supersonics were parked near each other and the striking similarity in design was a major talking point.
