MUSARURWA: "All objective evidence points to the fact that they are probably the greatest political fraud of the century. Only their desperate organisers, Smith and hi black puppets, and the so-called friends of Rhodesia, and as well as international thieves in the formal sanction violators, can shamelessly associate themselves with the rank fraud. We say so not in the spirit of (indistinct) but in the spirit of stating facts. and what we state here comes from reports that we have been receiving daily from our people in Zimbabwe. the elections were a glaring fraud. The president of ZAPU, Comrade Joshua Nkomo, could not be more right when he describes them as "non elections". Instead of eliminating the moral cause of the war they reinforce it. It means that the war will be fought with more fury and ferocity. That the elections were a fraud was not surprising to any discerning press, let alone to us. Since the constitution upon which they were based was a fraud, they were necessarily, naturally and logically bound to be also a fraud. the constitution represents political manipulation at its best. It gives majority rule with the left hand, and takes it with the right. It gives the African people the shadow of power, and retains its substance in the hands of the white minority."

A bomb blast in central Salisbury on Thursday (26 April) has chilled Bishop Abel Muzorewa's election euphoria, and served as a grim reminder of the country's unrelenting guerrilla war The bomb, which killed one man, went off in an alley behind a carpet store, as Muzorewa watched a march of thousands of his supporters celebrating his victory. The dead man was though to belong to Mr. Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army.

Background: In Zambia, a spokesman for the Black Nationalist ZAPU party (Zimbabwe African People's Union) has called the elections in Rhodesia last week a fraud. Mr. Willie Musarurwa said the already-bitter war being fought on the issue of black rule in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) will continue to be waged with "fury and ferocity". Bishop Abel Muzorewa's United African National Council (UANC) won fifty-one of the one hundred seats in the election, making him the first black Prime Minister-elect of Zimbabwe-Rhodesia. Mr. Robert Mugabe and Mr. Joshua Nkomo, the self-exiled Patriotic Front leaders, refused to take part in talks between white Prime Minister Ian Smith and the three internally-based Nationalist movements which led to the elections. And they maintain their stance that the elections will not end the war they are waging in Zimbabwe.
