Background: INTRODUCTION: In the Soviet Union, the world records table has been revised 31 times during an international weightlifting tournament at Lvov. About a hundred lifters from 16 countries took part in the Druzhba (Friendship) Cup. Soviet weightlifter David Rigert lost one world record in the 90 kilograms division, but he set another in the 100 kilos class.
SYNOPSIS: At the Lvov sports centre, the atmosphere was tense, the audience expectant as Rigert, aged 33, made his winning snatch of 185 kilos -- 1.5 kilos more than the world mark of his compatriot Igor Nikitin...
In the up-to-100 kilograms category, another Soviet lifter, Viktor Sots, gave an exceptional performance. The holder of the 1980 USSR cup won with a clean and jerk of 231.5 kilos, half a kilo more than fellow Russian Adam Saidulayev's world record....
Vyacheslav Klokov of the soviet Union, aged 22, is a world junior champion. He failed in this attempt to jerk 191 kilos in the up to 110 kilo class. But, in another try, he was successful and set up a new world record...
And yet another weightlifting world record was achieved by Russian Vladimir Marchuk in the super heavyweight division of 110 kilograms.
He recorded a jerk of 257.5 kilos, beating the previous best of 246 set by his compatriot Vasily Alexyev in 1977. Olympic champions Alexyev and Leonid Zhabothinsky were there to congratulate him for his great record lift.
