Background: Tennis...and Australian Wendy Turnbull turned in one of her best performances when she beat Britain's Virginia Wade in the final of a 125,000 dollar women's tournament in Philadelphia on Sunday (11 March). Miss Turnbull came back from one set down to beat the former Wimbledon Champion 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.

SYNOPSIS: In the first set, Miss Turnbull raced to a four-one lead before Miss Wade pulled back to four-all. The British girl, serving from the far end, had fought well to square the set, but had been on court completing a doubles match less than twelve hours before the final. The Australian gave her no chance with this delicate drop volley.

At five games all, a long rally developed as both players threw up high lobs to test their opponent's nerve.

But it was a disappointing end to the rally when Miss Turnbull's shot hit the lights and was called out. Miss Wade rode her luck to break service for a six-five lead.

The number six seed took the first set with a wide, swinging, clean ace.

The Australian squared the match in the second set with the help of some telling passing shots. Last year, Miss Turnbull soared in the International computer ranking, and in the final set she justified her fourth seeding with a powerful display which took her to three match points.

The British girl is now nearing veteran status, but even her experience could not bring her through this crisis. A netted volley and it was all over. The winner received 24,000 dollars, with the runner-up getting 12,000 dollars. For Miss Turnbull, it was a rare opportunity to see her name up in lights.
