Background: At Vilbuis, in the Soviet Union, a sports meeting with a difference was held recently. The difference - all the contestants were firemen. The events included races to put out small fires, and some dramatic events which involved scrambling up buildings with ladders, and racing over an obstacle course with hoses. The film was provided by Soviet television.
SYNOPSIS: In the Soviet Union some deliberately-lit fires were quickly put out. They were tests in a special sports day for firemen.
Every fire engine has its ladder, but the firemen had to leave the engine behind when they entered these races. They managed to get up these buildings faster than most people could using ordinary stairs. Still, its a useful technique to remember, arriving home late and having forgotten your key.
The firemen's sports are aimed at making the contestants use all their fire fighting skills, as well as testing physical strength. The events need endurance, agility and also a fair measure of courage - in fact, the very attributes needed by firemen in their professional work. This event tests the firemen in the way they can handle a hose - with a few difficulties put in their way.
Firemen from all over the Soviet Union took part in the events, which were held at the city of Vilbuis.
All the races were held over a hundred-metres course, but there's no talk so far of the events being included in the next Olympic Games.
The spectators enjoyed the events, which ended with a race in which they used an extending ladder weighing sixty kilograms. It was hard enough running with it, but the really tricky part was extending it vertically up the building which the competitors had to scale. The overall champions were Ivan Masuita and Apatcli Pauisov.
