Background: Swedish rider Bill Nilsson - world champion 1959 and '60 - gave an outstanding display of his skill Mar 12 when he beat twenty-nine competitors from seven countries to win the International 500 c.c. Moto-Cross event at St. Anthonis, Holland. Jeff Smith of Great Britain was second, and Sten Lundin of Sweden third.
Although the weather was fine, there were some very muddy patches left after recent rainfalls, and spectators were forced to run as competitors sprayed mud in all directions when they rode through. Stewards too were kept very busy extricating man and machine from the morass.
Judged after two heats, the St. Anthonis Moto-Cross event is the opening event of the West European motor-cycling cross-country competitions season. Competitors in this year's event came from Belgium; Britain; France; Germany; Holland; Italy; and Sweden.
