    Background: EGYPT, GIZA

The second largest pharonic pyramid at Giza has been declared off limits to tourists after the detection of a mysterious gas that caused sickness among visitors.

Civil defence and explosive officials went to the site and confirmed the presence of the gas.It seemed later that the offending fumes could have been the result of a prank.Speaking after an inspection of the burial tomb of the King Khafra Pyramid outside Cairo, Culture Minister Mohammed Abdul-Hamid Radwan said it had probably been done by 'some nitwit', to cause disturbance to tourists. But tests were begin made on air samples.

Police cordoned off the 5,000 year-old pyramid on April 16 after two western tourists came out of the burial chamber with inflamed eyes and short of breath. An Inspector of Antiquities at the scene said they did not require treatment.A Japanese tour group preceding them was not affected.A spokesman ruled out the possibility the gas could have risen through cracks in the chamber floor.Legend has it the dead Pharaoh will avenge those who disturb his burial chambers.
