Background: King Hussein of Jordan arrived in Damascus on Monday (18 August) for a five-day state visit to Syria. The Visit is intended as a follow-up to recent agreements on military, economic and political cooperation.
He flew his own jet into the Damascus airport where he was greeted by a cheering crowd carrying portraits of him and his host, President Hafez Al-Assad. Mrs. Assad was among the greeting party and Queen Alia was with King Hussein.
The two countries have been drawing closer together in recent months as Egypt has shown indications of perhaps going its own way in a settlement with Israel.
King Hussein is returning a visit made to Jordan by President Assad two months ago. Since then the two countries have reached agreement on several major issues.
