Background: There was no conflict between races Wednesday ( 17 July) in Cambridge, Maryland, but there was trouble between a television cameraman and a white man.
A minor traffic accident started it.
Six white youths were diving in a car and had the accident.
Police said they had been drinking. When police and some militia troops, who were stationed in the city to prevent racial disorders, tried to arrest the youths, a flight started.
George Sozio, a television cameraman of the National Broadcasting Company, was filming the incident. One youth broke free of the group and started to attack Mr. Sozio.
Sozio defended himself by blocking the man's punches with his left hand. In his right hand, he gripped his camera and then swung and hit his attacked on the shoulder with the camera.
Otherwise, there was no trouble.
