    Background: The Womens Long Jump was won by Mary Rand of Great Britain with a world record leap of 6.76 meters (22ft 2 in). Mrs Rand achieved this record with he fifth leap. Second with a jump of 6.60 meters was Irene Kirszenstein of Poland and third with 6.42 meters was Tatyana Schelkanova of the USSR.

    In one of the major surprises of the games the 10,000 meters was won by Billy Mills of the United States who came through with a fantastic finishing burst to beat Gammoudi of Tunisia with Ron Clarke, favourite for the title, of Australia third. Mills time was 28' 24.4".

    Franke of Poland won the Gold Medal in the men's foil individuals from Magnan of France and Losert of Austria. Franke beat Magnan by 5 hits to 4 in the final. Franke was on the offensive immediately and took a 3 -0 lead. Lat year's world champion Magnon recovered to 4-4 but Franke went on to win.
