TRANSCRIPT: Prime Minister Sir Roy Welensky: "It's not a question so much of approving but what is the right thing to do. We have in the past tried to work a political representation not on the basis of race. I feel that if you entrench communal representation then you are in fact entrenching racialism into your parliament. We of course recognise that while the African is at his present state of advancement you've got to give him some direct representation in the House and that's why I've accepted the present system. Frankly, I think it would be a tragedy to entrench African or European representation in the House. I want some people who will sit there who are chosen on the grounds of merit irrespective of race or colour. But I do accept there be a transition period where you've got to have people of a particular colour. I'm not averse to an increase of African representation as long as it is only a passing phase for I believe that if we are to succeed in what we're trying to do we must in the next 25 or 30 years demonstrate that is on merit that a man gets into parliament and not on a basis of colour whether it's white or black."

I recognize that there is some good advice offered in this Report and I am prepared to consider it but of course I'm not prepared to compromise on this issue of secession.
