Background: Officials of the Queensland Mines Department in Australia have said it may be months before excavations can be made at the Box Flat colliery, in Ipswich, where seventeen miners died in two pit explosions on July 30th.

The mine was sealed off on Monday (July 31) and a burial ceremony was held for fourteen men trapped between three hundred and nine hundred feet (100 and 300 metres) below ground. The bodies of three other men killed in the disaster were found at the pithead.

The men died when fire ignited methane gas, which in turn triggered a more powerful explosion of coal gas in the mine.
