Background: Two of Britain's old-established car manufacturers, Rolls-Royce and Bently, this week introduce a new two-door model that is the last word in hand-made luxury. Called the "Corniche", the new car is a grand tourer in the great tradition of Rolls Royce. Such cars were first built by Sir Henry Royce in 1907 to motor from England to the corniches of the Franch Riviera.

SYNOPSIS: Whatever the recent difficulties experienced by the Rolls-Royce aero-engine division, the old-established and profitable car manufactures are continuing to produce models that are the last word in hand-built luxury.

This week, Rolls-Royce and Bentley introduce the Corniche, a two-door saloon and convertible. The car is in a great tradition dating back to 1907, when Sir Henry Royce built his first grand touring cars capable of motoring from England to the corniches of the French Riviera.

The new model was developed from the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow and Bentley T Series. Increased engine power gives the Corniche a greatly improved performance. Maximum speed is in excess of a hundred and twenty miles an hour and acceleration has been improved at overtaking speeds. Yet the makers claim the engine is quieter than previous power units. The specification includes independent suspension, three separate braking systems, automatic transmission and power-assisted steering. The Corniche is fully air-conditioned.
