TRANSCRIPT: This has been one of the nastiest areas we have had to clear with in the whole British Guiana. We call this track we are standing on the 'Maginot Line', because it divides a negro village on my right and Indian village on my left. Now the very first trouble that happened on this part of the coast, happened at the back of these two villages. When two negro's were murdered by some Indians and there-after our job was to try and keep the negroes from this village. In July alone, two hundred were killed around here and nearly two hundred houses were burnt, women, children and old people the lot. The Guianaian people are normally friendly people but when they are stirred up by interracial strife it is terrible, but we have got the respect of the local people.

Background: British Guiana has again reached the stage where she is demanding her independence. Small nations such as British Guiana still have to demand their independence in the traditional way with protests and mob violence. In reply to this demand the British Government is expected to answer in about a years time.
At America's insistence Britain had defewed this problem during the premiership of Cheddi Jagan's three years in office.
British Guiana has many problems - the biggest one is the sea and how to keep it out. The dyke which surrounds the country consumes one tenth of the national budget for the safety of the nation and its people.
The main produce of the British Guiana is it's sugar-cane which is brought by Britain at high prices. If these prices were not paid the economy would be in a very bad state.
The General Election which has just finished was fought on racial lines, which lead to violence and blood shed. With all this trouble still very much at boiling point, the British Troops are on constant patrol around the villages in case it starts again.
