BADER: "This operation came on the seventh anniversary of the Front. It came on the next day of the Israeli attack on the revolutionary institutions in Beirut -- the culture institution (indistinct) and the PLO office. It was planned to kill whoever crowd after the first part of the operation. After the first rocket exploded, then there would be, as there was, another rocket to be exploded at that crowd ...whoever crowd it was."

Background: Guerrilla warfare reached the heart of Israel's capital, Tel Aviv, on Wednesday night (11 December) with a grenade attack in a cinema which killed three people -- including the attacker -- and injured fifty-four.

The attack on the crowded cinema was in retaliation for attacks earlier in the week on Palestinian headquarters in the Lebanese capital, Beirut--Mr. Adnan Bader, a spokesman for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP), said in Beirut on Thursday (12 December). The PFLP is opposed to any political settlement with Israel over the Palestinian question.

Following the Tel Aviv cinema attack, Israeli jets on Thursday (12 December) struck at Palestine commando bases south of Beirut. An Israeli military spokesman, Mr. Aharon Yariv, later confirmed that the attack was a reprisal raid. According to reports from Lebanon, no-one was killed in the raid, but ten people were injured.

The air attack damaged several buildings at the Al Saiqa Commando depot on the outskirts of Beirut, but according to commandoes on the spot, a second strike failed to hit its target.

Part of a statement by PFLP spokesman, Mr. Bader, appears on this film. A transcription follows:
