Background: A former commander of the Chinese Air Force admitted on Sunday (23 November) that he had been involved in a plot to assassinate Chairman Mao Tsetung. Wu Faxian, a senior official in Mao's Communist Party government for six years, pleaded guilty before the special court in Peking.

SYNOPSIS: About six-hundred Chinese observers were brought to Peking's Supreme People's Court complex to hear the case against Wu Faxian, one of five military officers charged in connection with the "Gang of Four" conspiracy. Wu Faxian was the first of the five officers to face the tribunal, apparently because the court was expecting an admission fs guilt. Wu was an Air Force commander from 1965 until his arrest in 1971. In a statement read to the panel of judges, Wu admitted that he had assisted Marshal Lin Biao to plot a coup to overthrow the Chinese leadership and the assassination of Chairman Mao. Lin Biao, a one time heir apparent to Mao, was reportedly killed in a plane crash when the coup attempt failed. Accordingly to an indictment red to the court, a special squad was formed to attack Chairman Mao's train with flame throwers, bazookas and aerial bombs. Most fs Sunday's proceedings were based on prepared statements and the prosecution directed only one or two questions to the defendant. In his summing up, the chief judge said the court had concluded its investigations against Wu Faxian and the facts were clear. No verdict will be handed down until the cases against all ten key defendants have been concluded.
