Background: SEVERAL HUNDRED KENYANS, INCLUDING MRS MAMA NGINA KENYATTA, WIFE OF KENYAN PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA, AND GOVERNMENT MEMBERS AND OFFICIALS, ASSEMBLED AT A LEADING NAIROBI HOTEL YESTERDAY TO SEE ALMOST 50 MODELS DISPLAY COLOURFUL CLOTHING "FOR WHAT LOOKS RIGHT IN AFRICA TODAY". THE FASHION SHOW AS WAS PRESENTED BY DESIGNER SULTI KARIM, UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FAMILY SERVICE COUNCIL OF KENYA AND THE AGA KHAN ISMAILI WOMEN'S ASSOCIATION.

MME. KARIM'S COLLECTION WITH THE THEME "IDEES AFRIQUES" WAS SAID TO SHOW THE MARK OF IMPECCABLE GOOD TASTE AND AN UNERRING INSTINCT OF WHAT LOOKS RIGHT IN AFRICA TODAY. THE COLLECTION HAD A DISTINCTLY INTERNATIONAL FLAVOUR, BUT HAD BEEN ADAPTED IN TRADITIONAL DRESSING TO GIVE SOPHISTICATED CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN DESIGNS.

THE MAJORITY OF THE DESIGNS SHOWN WERE IN KITENGE, A CLOTH USED EXTENSIVELY IN EAST AFRICA. THE MODELS INCLUDED MISS KENYA, JOSEPHINE MOIKOBU, AND MISS UGANDA, JOY LEHAI.

DESIGNS RANGED FROM DAY THROUGH TO EVENING WEAR SWIM SUITS AND BEACH WEAR.

AMONG THE GUESTS AT THE FASHION SHOWING WERE THE SPEAKER OF THE KENYA PARLIAMENT, MR. HUMPHREY SLADE; THE MINISTER FOR SOCIAL SERVICE, MR. RONALD NGALA, AND DEFENCE MINISTER DR. NJOROGE MUNGAI.
