Background: THREE SHIPS COLLIDED THIS MORNING (SATURDAY) AT WESTERN SCHELDE, OFF THE DUTCH COAST. THEY WERE THE NORWEGIAN VESSEL VIRIHAURE, AND THE DUTCH SHIPS BOYLEM AND FRUBEL AMERICA.

THE COLLISION OCCURRED DURING HEAVY WEATHER JUST AFTER DAWN.

THE FRUBEL WAS ABLE TO SAIL UNDER HER OWN STEAM FOR ANTWERP AFTER THE COLLISION, BUT THE OTHER TWO VESSELS WERE LOCKED TOGETHER FOR NEARLY TWELVE HOURS.

NINE TUGS ANSWERED CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE AND WERE EVENTUALLY USED TO PULL THE TWO SHIPS APART.

THE VIRIHAURE HAD A THIRTY-FOOT HOLE IN THE BOW AND WAS REPORTED TO HAVE TAKEN ON A LOT OF WATER. IT SAILED LATER FOR ANTWERP WHERE IT WILL BE DRY-DOCKED FOR REPAIRS.

AN INQUIRY WILL BE MADE INTO THE ACCIDENT.
