Background: Cambodia's leaders, among them Head of State Cheng Heng, Deputy Premier Sirik Matak and General In Tam, first vice-premier, yesterday (Monday) took part in colourful ceremonies to mark the birth of Buddha.

The centre of the capital, Phnom Penh, was sealed off as the leaders made the traditional offerings of food to the saffron-robed monks.

Prime Minister Lon Nol, recovering from a crippling stroke, was not present at the ceremonies, but Monday's newspapers carried a message in which he urged the people to support the new government formed last week after an 18-day vacuum caused by Lon Nol's resignation announcement.

Cambodia is by tradition a devoutly Buddhist country, and its leaders lay stress on the religion as a counterweight to Communism, which is depicted as an anti-Buddhist movement.
