    Background: One of the traditional sights of Taipei, capital of Taiwan, will soon disappear. Thousands of trishaws which have served as taxis for the poorer class of people for decades are being put off the road.

    In many other parts of South-east Asia this common form of transport is being eased off the roads -- mainly because trishaws slow down traffic, but also because governments feel that the sight of the struggling drivers in degrading.

    In Taipei alone there are nearly 40,000 trishaws. During the next two years the Government will be buying them from the owners to burned.

    Already thousands of trishaws have been destroyed and the owners compensated. The Government has set aside a special fund to buy the trishaws and help all those affected by the move.

    The trishaw riders battle under Taipei's gruelling sun all day and barely manage to earn a living. Many of them supplement their meagre earning by working at night as watchmen on Government and commercial offices.
