Background: The annual jazz festival at the quiet New England summer resort of Newport, Rhode Island, USA, was stopped July 2. It was to have lasted until July 5, but on the night of July 2, thousands of fans, unable to get in to hear internationally famous stars perform, rioted.

Sixteen thousand were admitted to Freebody Park, but twelve thousand others were refused admission although many held tickets. Officials said that they had arrived too late and their tickets had been sold. They went mad. Beer cans and bottles were thrown at the police. Teen-age rioters stormed through the town, kicking in shop windows and assaulting passers-by.

Police were overwhelmed, and emergency calls brought out State Troopers and Marines. Tear gas was used to disperse the irate mob and fire hoses cooled them with high-pressure jets.

Thirty were injured, and more than 200 youths were imprisoned. An emergency meeting of the City Council cut short the scheduled five-day Seventh Annual Festival. Organisers said afterwards that they would sue the Council for four million dollars compensation.
