Background: Munich - host city for the 1972 Olympic Games - is preparing for its greatest-ever influx of visitors. In the next few weeks twelve thousand competitors and team personnel will take up residence in the Olympic Village, while visitors from scores of nations book into Munich's modern hotels.

The city has been transformed for the Games. Modern new skyscraper hotels have sprung up offering accommodation for 130-thousand people. Many of the hotels are members of international chains, the Sheraton and the Holiday Inn for example, and they are offering the wide range of accommodation and service necessary for their multi-racial guests.

In the centre of Munich is Marienplatz, Munich's main shopping area and square. Until recently it was also a traffic bottleneck. Munich planners have closed the area to all vehicles, transforming it into a spacious pedestrian precinct.

The Olympic Village and Press City lie near the main competition sites. The accommodation was built by private enterprise which is renting the apartments to the Games' organisers. After the Games, the apartments will be offered for sale.

Inside the Olympic Village, every effort has been made to assure athletes of privacy. The rooms themselves will provide refuge for highly-strung competitors, while the grounds around the apartment blocks have been designed to give a feeling of open space. Despite this, competitors will have no difficulty in reaching the city centre when they want to. An underground railway links the village with the city, and the journey takes just ten minutes.
