Background: A four-man Japanese Parliamentary delegation, led by Japan's Foreign affairs Committee Chairman, visited the major Salt Lake City refugee camp for Pakistanis in Calcutta on Tuesday (September 21). They also had a meeting in Calcutta with the West Bengal Governor and later flew to Delhi where they were expected to call on Mrs. Gandhi. Japan has so far contributed about five million (U.S.) dollars (about GBP1 3/4 million sterling) to the indian refugee fund.

SYNOPSIS: The Pakistan situation....and while India continues to carry the burden of several million refugees, crowded into camps from the border all the way to Calcutta, sporadic fighting continues in East Pakistan. A Pakistan Government radio broadcast from Karachi, in the country's western sector, said on Tuesday at 41 guerrillas had been killed in East Pakistan. It said they were part of a group of 250 intercepted by Government troops.

Back in India, the refugee problem remains. On Tuesday, a four-man Japanese Parliamentary delegation led by the Chairmen of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr. Yoshio Sakurachi, paid an official inspection visit to the major Salt Lake City refugee camp just outside Calcutta. The other members of the delegation are Mr. Nagata, Mr. Masahisha Aoki and Mr. Eichi Nakao.

Their tour took them to the camp classrooms, medical clinics, sleeping quarters and milk distribution units. Japan is among several nations which have contributed heavily towards the cost of receiving and keeping the refugees--so far, it has given about GBP1 4/3 million sterling. (That's about five million U.S. dollars.)
Later that day the delegation met the West Bengal Governor in Calcutta, and then flew to Delhi where they were expected to call on India's Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.
