Background: United States Black Militant Stokely Carmichael was among delegates of the Pan-African People's Revolutionary Party who took part in talks with the ruling Iraqi Arab Baath Socialist Party in Baghdad which ended on Sunday (February 24).

The Pan-African delegation was invited to Iraq by the ruling party to witness the country's progress under a socialist government. Stokely Carmichael, formerly a leader of the student wing of Martin Luther King's Civil Rights Movement and a power behind the growth of the Black Panther group in the United States, spent nine days in Iraq meeting leaders of the socialist government and party executive.

A seminar was held at the Al-Mustenseria University in Baghdad with Carmichael the leading speaker. In his address he talked about the black people's struggle in the United States against the capitalist system. Flanked by the head of the National Students' Brueau of Iraq and Zuhair Al-Bariqdar, the Director of the Baathists' Foreign Relations Office, Mr. Carmichael denounced International Zionism and imperialism. He said the two were the biggest obstacles to world African unity. The leader of the Pan-African People's Revolutionary Party also praised the struggle of the Palestinian people against Israel, claiming they had the support of all the "good forces in the world".

The following day (Sunday 24) the final round of talks were held at the headquarters of the Baath Party's National Leadership and once more the main issue was the struggle of oppressed people around the world. Both sides expressed the belief that the only way open to them was to continue the battle against "imperialism, zionism and international reactionaries".
