Background: The second day of the Third Test in Sydney Jan 14 saw the West Indies fight back after a sensational collapse in the first hour's play in the morning.

Play ended 55-minutes before stumps with Australia five down for a hard-earned 172 in reply to the West Indies first innings of 339.

Details of Australia's innings were: Simpson 10, Harvey 9, McDonald 34, Favell 16, O'Neill 71, Mackay 27 not out and Davidson 3 not out.

A total five for one hundred and seventy two.

The game swung Australia's way when the last five West Indies wickets fell before the bowling of Davidson and Benaud for the addition of only 36 runs to their overnight score. At one stage, Solomon, who scored fourteen, Sobers 168, and Alexander and Gibbs, who both failed to score were out without a run being added. Sobers magnificent innings, just under half his side's score, ended when he mistimed a hook and was caught and bowled by Davidson. Davidson finished with five for 86, and Benaud four for 86.

Australia lost the initiative when Kanhai at leg slip dived full length to catch Simpson off Hall for ten. Then, before lunch and tea, Harvey also fell to Hall, and Valentine got McDonald and Favell.

O'Neill who scored a fighting 71 in 142 minutes, was the final batsman to go when he was clean bowled by Sobers. Mackay is 27 not out and Davidson three. O'Neill was the only Australian to get on top of the bowling. More than forty thousand people were watching the day's play.
