Background: After two unsuccessful attempts at tackling the Mont de Clapier pass, France by which Hannibal is supposed to have crossed the Alps into Italy exactly 2.177 years ago - two-ton pachyderm 'Jumbo' was taken by British 'Hannibal Expedition' leader John Hoyte across Mont Cenis.

Original plans for the Clapier crossing failed when weather conditions worsened and the strain of the nine-day march began to tell on the 11 year-old female elephant.

The Journey was undertaken to prove Cambridge historian Professor A.N. Macdonald's theory that Hannibal's army of 30,000 men, 5,000 horses and 37 elephants had crossed the Alps in the Savoie district by way of the highest pass - 8,173ft Mont Clapier.

Commenting on their failure John Hoyte declared he would have pressed on via Mont Clapier if he had been the owner of the animal. But Jumbo was borrowed from Turin zoo and could not be put to such an exacting task.

Jumbo's attempt has aroused keen interest in the problem and there are reports that two more expeditions may start in the near future.
