    THE CONFERENCE HAS BEEN ORGANISED BY THE WORLD BUDDHIST SANGHA, OR CLERGY. THE TEACHINGS OF BUDDHA HAVE BEEN PASSED DOWN IN CEYLON UNINTERRUPTED FOR MORE THAN 2,500 YEARS.

    THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE DELEGATION IS BEING LED BY THICH TAM CHAU, A LEADER OF THE SAIGON BUDDHISTS WHO PLAYED AN IMPORTANT MODERATING ROLE IN THE RECENT CONFLICT WITH THE MILITARY GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER NGUYEN CAO KY.

    PRESENT AT THE OPENING CEREMONY ON MONDAY (MAY 9) WERE THE PRIME MINISTER OF CEYLON, MR. DUDLEY SENANAYAKE, THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL MR. WILLIAM GOPALLAWA AND MEMBERS OF THE DIPLOMATIC CORPS.

    WELCOMING THE DELEGATES, VENERABLE KALUKONDAYAWE PANNASEKERA MAHA NAYAKA, THE PRESIDENT OF THE BUDDHIST CLERGY IN CEYLON, SAID THAT A WORLD TORN WITH WAR AND CONFLICT NEEDED THE MESSAGE OF PEACE OF THE BUDDHA. THE WORLD WAS FAST DEVELOPING SCIENTIFICALLY AND MATERIALLY BUT DETERIORATING IN SPIRITUAL VALUES.
