The ship's arrival came as British and Maltese officials met to set the scene for a resumption of the Rome negotiations on the future of the British bases on the island.
After Saturday's meeting, both Maltese Premier Dom Mintoff and British Defence Secretary Lord Carrington said there was a possibility of a settlement. But Lord Carrington want on to say that British forces would continue to be withdrawn.
