Background: Zaire, the African representatives in the 1974 World Cup Competition, went down to an unexpected 2-1 defeat to the Congo when the two sides met in the Africa Cup Competition in Alexandria. Egypt, on Tuesday (2 March).

Despite an early Zaire goal, the Congo - current holders of the African Cup - fought back strongly to take the lead and qualify for the semi-finals of the competition in which they will meet Zambia. Zaire also went on the qualify to meet Egypt in the semi-final when they trounced mauritius 4-1 in the final game of their group on Thursday.

From the start of the game, both teams played open attacking football with their forwards showing a high standard of shooting in the goal area. All three goals came from long, opportunist shots that flashed through the defenders leaving the goalkeepers little chance of saving.

Watched by a crowd of just over 7,000 people, it was Zaire who put on the pressure at the start and soon had the Congo keeper handling a series of shots. Then, after 26 minutes, Zaire right-winger, Mayanga Maku, shot through a mass of players to put his team in the lead.

In the second half, the style of the Congo team gradually took command of the game and it was Mbono who tied the score at 1-1 after sixty minutes. Both teams tried nard to break the deadlock, and it was the Congo who finally succeeded just eight minutes from the end when Minga lashed yet another long-range shot past a goalkeeper unsighted by the attackers and defenders filling his goal area.

Although Zaire lost this game, international experts noted the tremendous improvement in their style - an improvement that has been also noted in the other three semi-finalists, Egypt, Congo and Zambia. The high standard of the Africa Cup Competition in Egypt is expected to be used as an argument by the African nations in their bid to claim four places in the 1978 World Cup Finals against their present allocation of one final place.
