    Background: France's new one-thousand-million-franc radio telescope... Situated far from towns or factories south of Orleans, at Nancay on Sologne, the new telescope may one day be as famous as Britain's radio-telescope at Jodrell Bank.

    There are two mirror-like receiving aerials - one is spherical, built on a metal frame and fixed to the ground. It is 300 metres wide and 35 metres high, and is slightly curved to form part of the surface of a sphere. It concentrates the radio waves from space on to a focal point 280 metres in front of it.

    With this part of the equipment only the lower part of the sky, near the horizon, can be studied. For the rest of the sky there is another "mirror" aerial which can be rotated on a horizontal axis. The radio waves it receives are reflected on to the spherical mirror. The horizontal mirror measures 200 by 40 metres, and has just been completed. First experiments have already been carried out.

    A remote situation was chosen for the telescope as industrial areas would interfere with reception of radio waves.
