Background: Australia's greatest horse race, the Melbourne Cup, run over two miles, was won at Flemington, Victoria, Nov. 3, by the Queensland horse, 'Macdougal', ridden by South Australian jockey Pat Glennon.

Second came 'Nether Gold', ridden by W. Camer, and third in a photo finish, 'White Hills', ridden by R. Higgins.

Heavily-backed 'Macdougal', a six-year-old gelding, won the race in three minutes 23 seconds and by three lengths.

A crowd of more than 80 thousand packed the stands and lawns to cheer the exciting finish
The Melbourne Cup, richest race in the Australian toto calendar, offered prize-money of GBP15,000 (Australian pounds) this year, and a trophy worth GBP500 (Australian).

Australia's Governor-General, Sir William Slim presented the gold cup to the owner, Reg Brown of Julia Creek, Queensland.

For jockey Glennon it was his second Melbourne triumph. In 1950 he won the race on 'Comic Court'.
