    TURKEY'S FOREIGN MINISTERS, MR. FERIDUN ERKIN, CALLED AT THE FOREIGN OFFICE THIS MORNING. HE WAS FOLLOWED IN THE AFTERNOON BY THE GREEK FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. XANTHOPOULOS-PALAMAS, WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE GREEK AMBASSADOR IN LONDON.

    REPORTS INDICATE THAT TODAY'S EXPLORATORY MEETING WERE CONCERNED WITH THE POSSIBLE ROLE THE UNITED NATIONS MIGHT PLAY IN ANY SETTLEMENT THAT EMERGES FROM THE LONDON CONFERENCE.

    THE TWO FOREIGN MINISTERS ARE EXPECTED TO MEET AGAIN TOMORROW (TUESDAY), AT A LUNCH GIVEN BY MR. BUTLER. BRITAIN, GREECE AND TURKEY ARE THE GUARANTOR POWERS OF THE PRESENT CYPRUS CONSTITUTION DRAWN UP IN 1960.

    OTHER DEVELOPMENTS IN THE CYPRUS DISPUTE TODAY. IN LONDON: MR. RAUF DENKTASH, LOUDER OF THE TURKISH-CYPRIOT DELEGATION, TOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE THAT CYPRUS WAS IN DANGER OF A COMMUNIST COUP IF PRESIDENT MAKARIOS SUCCEEDED IN REMOVING THE 'TURKISH FACTOR' IN THE ISLAND. MR. DENKTASH SAID THE COMMUNISTS WERE STRONG IN CYPRUS AND WERE IN A POSITION TO TAKE OVER THE GOVERNMENT OVERNIGHT.

    IN NEW YORK: U THANT OUTLINED HIS INTENTIONS FRO A SPECIAL UN REPRESENTATIVE ON THE TROUBLED ISLAND, TO MR. ROSSIDES, CYPRUS DELEGATE TO THE UN. ALSO IN NEW YORK, THE PUBLICATION OF A LETTER FROM MR. ROSSIDES (DATED 11TH JAN), ACCUSING THE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS AND TURKEY OF TRYING TO WRECK THE LONDON CONFERENCE BEFORE IT OPENS.

    IN NICOSIA: THE ACTING BRITISH HIGH COMMISSIONER, EXPRESSED HIS CONCERN TO PRESIDENT MAKARIOS AT THE "MISUNDERSTANDINGS AND LACK OF CONFIDENCE ON BOTH SIDES" IN THE TRUCE ARRANGEMENTS.
