Background: In Eastern Cambodia, the South Vietnamese have cleared the North Vietnamese and their Cambodian Red Khmer allies from the villages around the Mekong city of Kompong Cham. On the 21st and 22nd of December, the South Vietnamese Airborne 7th Battalion from Kompong Cham attacked and retook the town of Bos Khnaor on Highway 21 between Kompong Cham and Kompong Thom.
The attack on Bos Khnaor coincided with the rice harvest and was partly and effort to prevent the harvest falling into the hands of the Communists. The North Vietnamese pulled out very quickly under fire, leaving behind many dead. The South Vietnamese said that the bodies were all those of regular North Vietnamese Army soldiers. The South Vietnamese say that Highway 21 is now open almost to Kompong Thom, which is still surrounded by the Communists.
