Background: General Pinochet, the leader of the Chilean Military Government, - attended a mass for 40 soldiers at the Military Academy in Santiago on Sunday (November 11). The soldiers were killed when the armed forces overthrew the coalition government of Marxist President Salvador Allende on September 11th. General Pinochet then attended a ceremony of allegiance to the Chilean flag at the barracks of the Second Tank Regiment. The ceremony was to celebrate two months of rule by the Military Government.
General Pinochet made a speech before the mass in which he announced that seven guerrillas had been killed in an attack on an army garrison in the City of Temuco. This was the first official report of organised armed resistance to the regime since the bitter fighting which followed the coup. Earlier in the week the military government announced that 140 people have been officially executed since September the 11th.
