Background: Preparations for the winter season were pushed ahead last weekend because of the arrival of Winter in Switzerland's Jungfrau Region. Weathermen believed the early snow was unprecedented for the time of year.
Skilifts were operating at the weekend. The pinetrees wore thick coats of snow, out came the snow-clearers, snow-blowers, skieshoes and sticks, bobsleighs.
Naturally the Swiss took to the snow as a duck to water. At Muerren, hotel-keepers shovelled it away, then brought deck chairs on the veranda for tourists to sit on the sun.
A mountain farmer with ski stick transported the milk in a container, firewood merchants delivered logs by bobsleigh, the snow-blower cleared the mountain railroad, another, the village centre. The boys brought out their sleds as other boys, in countries without snow, bring out their bicycles. And on the sloped of the Lauberhorn, a solitary figure of a girl skiing in the sun lightened the Winter day.
The main thing was to make the most of it for nobody knew whether the snow was to remain or whether it was to melt away as quickly as it freakishly came.
