Background: Soviet Union Communist Party leader Leonid Brezhnev arrived in Bucharest on Monday (22 November) for an official visit and received a massive welcoming ceremony he says he'll never forget.
SYNOPSIS: In all the welcome involved about 200,000 people. Thousands were at Bucharest airport when Mr. Brezhnev's jet touched down and thousands more were lining the streets of the city waiting for the official motorcade to pass by. After embracing Rumanian President Nicolae Ceausescu, Mr. Brezhnev met other Rumanian government officials as the huge crowd chanted "Ceausescu-Brezhnev."
Choirs sang, orchestras played and folk groups danced. The welcome brought a delighted reaction from Mr. Brezhnev, who said he would never forget it. The visit is Mr. Brezhnev's first to Rumania since 1966. Formal talks are due to begin on Wednesday but no official guide to discussions has been issued. The Soviet leader is accompanied by Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and Soviet Communist Party secretary Knostantin Katushev.
President Ceausescu drove to meet Mr. Brezhnev after a meeting with U.S. Commerce Secretary Elliot Richardson.
On Sunday night the men signed a 10 year agreement aimed at boosting U.S.-Rumanian co-operation and trade.
