Background: A delegation including some of the Soviet Union's most senior officials concerned with light industry are in Italy this week. Heading it are Mr. Alexei Kosygin, a member of the party praesidium, and Mr. Petr Demichev, a secretary of the central committee. They are attending the Soviet trade fair in Genoa.
The fair, served by a Soviet staff of 200, is believed to be the largest exhibition organised in Italy by a foreign country. Manufactured goods ranging from hand-painted boxes to automated industrial machinery are on show.
Mr. Kosygin, who became Minister of Light and Food Industries after Stalin's death and has served as chairman of Gosplan, the state planning agency, is one of the communist party leaders principally responsible for industrial questions. Mr. Demichev is chairman of the central committee bureau for the chemical industry, a post which has become particularly important since the recent decision to make additional investments in this sector.
