Background: A commission responsible for organising the first Ethiopian Workers Party is currently meeting in Addis Ababa to finalise details for the formation of a mass political movement in the country. The promise of political power was given to the Ethiopian people by the nation's leader, Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam, in September last year. In the capital, thousands of people attended a torchlight parade on the eve of the commission's first meeting.

SYNOPSIS: Some then thousand citizens of Addis Ababa crowed into the city's Revolution Square on Sunday (15 June) to celebrate the formation of the commission. The commission was due to open its four-day meeting on Monday (16 June).

Youth organisations were among those who staged displays in the square singing revolutionary songs to welcome delegates from all over Ethiopia to Addis Ababa for the commission meeting.

An Ethiopian government proclamation announcing the formation of the People's Working Party commission last December, said its aim was to disseminate Marxist-Leninist teachings among the Ethiopian people, with the ultimate aim of establishing a people's republic.

At the climax of the torchlight parade, members of the commission took part in a bonfire-lighting ceremony .. and symbol of the revolutionary spirit of the occasion.
