Background: Throughout the United States of America millions of people celebrated Columbus Day with traditional parades, bands and festivities on Monday (October 12 ). In New York 75,000 took part in a mammoth procession through the streets.

Wherever there are large Italian communities in the United States, Columbus Day is a very special day - an occasion for celebrating.

Indicative of the parades throughout the nation was New York's procession through Fifth Avenue. An estimated 850,000 people watched as the colourful parade would its way through the streets and avenues of the metropolis.

Men and women wore the colourful costumes of their native sections in Italy; politicians turned out to watch; bands from High Schools and many associations played and marched, schools were closed for the day. It was a day to be enjoyed - American-Italian style.
