    Background: United States General Louis Truman, heading up the American mission to assess military capabilities in the Congo, met Wednesday (19 December) with United Nations Secretary U Thant and his Congo aides. Following the meeting at the United Nations, General Truman was questioned by reporters, including NBC reporter Charles Quinn.

    A After the conference he left for Washington for additional meetings at the Pentagon and then returned to New York the following day (Thursday, 20 December) for talks with Robert K.A., Gardiner, the Chief U.N.Congo officer and U.N. Under Secretary Ralph Bunche. He leaves late Thursday for the Congo.

    Although General Truman limited his remarks to newsmen, he will be traveling with a group that includes several specialists including an Air Force General and a representative of the American State Department.
