Background: AFTER TALKS AT STATE HOUSE IN LAGOS, A RELIGIOUS SECT ENCAMPED ON THE CITY BEACH, HAS JUST BEEN GRANTED A THREE-MONTH STAY ON AN EVICTION ORDER. THEY REVERE THE BEACH AS A PRAYING GROUND AND HELD A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE GRANTING OF THE EXTENSION PERIOD.

THE NOTICE TO QUIT HAD BEEN SERVED ON THEM BECAUSE THE AUTHORITIES SAID THEY WERE HOLDING UP WORK ON PROTECTING THE BEACH FROM EROSION. ACCORDING TO THE NIGERIAN PORTS AUTHORITY, MEMBERS OF THE SECT HAD BEEN SCOOPING UP LARGE QUANTITIES OF SAND AND HAD PUT IT UP IN HEAPS WHERE THEY REGULARLY WORSHIPPED.

THE SECT CALLING THEMSELVES CHERUBIMS AND SERAPHIMS SAID THAT ONLY GOD COULD REMOVE THEM FROM THE BEACH. WHEN THEY LEARNED THEIR APPEAL TO THE HEAD OF THE FEDERAL MILITARY GOVERNMENT, MAJOR-GENERAL JOHNSON AGUIYI-IRONSI, HAD SUCCEEDED, SPECIAL SERVICES WERE HELD.

FOR THREE MONTHS ALL WILL BE WELL. BUT AFTER THAT THEY HAVE TO FIND AN ALTERNATIVE PLACE FOR WORSHIP.
