Background: The new commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the Khmer Republic, Major-General Sosthene Fernandez, made his first official visit to Phnom Penh on Monday (25 June) since his installation into office.
Major-General Feranandez was appointed by Marshal Loon Nol on June 21, and his visit to an area 17 miles (28 km) east of Phnom Penh took him to see Government troops in action.
The Major-General was met when his helicopter landed by Khmer Republic military officials, and after a brief inspection of troops, he met some of the villagers. He spoke with some of them and warned them to stay where they were and not to consider running away.
Before the Major-General flew back to Phnom Penh, he spoke with several monks. He was farewelled again by Government army officials.
SYNOPSIS: The Khmer Republic's new Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, Major-General Sosthene Fernandez, flew into a devastated village 17 miles from Phnom Penh on Monday to inspect the damage and visit the troops the Government forces. It was the Major-General's first visit to Phnom Penh as Commander-in-Chief since he was installed into office by Marshal Loon Nol on the twenty-first of June.
Major-General Sosthene was greeted at Kampeng airfield by high ranking Government forces officials, and before he toured the village, he reviewed a Guard of Honour which assembled for him. The Major-General was accompanied by Marshal Loon Nol's private secretary, and the Governor of the Kirirom province.
Before Major-General Sosthene left the airport to tour the devastated village, he met several monks and prayed with them.
In the village, the Major-General spoke with dozens of townspeople. He struck a sombre note when he warned them not to try to run away from their homes...he said that if there was more fighting, everybody would be needed.
After his brief visit to the village and the troops, Government officers escorted the Major-General back to his aircraft.
