    Background: Nigeria's Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, presented certificates of merit to ten foundation members of the Nigerian National Youth Service Corps at a ceremony at the Dodan Barracks, Lagos on Monday (12 August).

    In a speach during the presentation proceedings General Gowon said that the Corps members have proved to the world in no small measure that the future of Nigeria is in the hands of young people.

    He paid particular tribute to the State Governments, the Directorate of the National Youth Service Corps, the Nigerian press and the participating Corps members for their contributions to the successful implementation of the scheme.

    General Gowon congratulated the ten Corps members for earning the honour accorded to them for their achievements and urged them to uphold the attributes which have endeared them to the communities where they served.

    SYNOPSIS: Ten foundation members of the Nigerian National Youth service Corps were presented with certificates of merit at a ceremony at the Dodan barracks, Lagos, on Monday. The Head of state, General Yakubu Gowon, presided.

    In his speech General Gowon said that although there is still room for improvement in its implementation, the National Youth Service Corps scheme has been successful. He went on to say that the Corps members have proved in no small measure that Nigeria's future is in the hands of young people. "As the scope and coverage of the scheme are widened", he said, "the responsibilities involved in its implementation will increase."
    General Gowon paid tribute to the State Governments, the Directorate of the National Youth Service Corps, the Nigerian press and the participating corps members for their contributions towards the successful implementation of the scheme. He also congratulated the ten corps members for earning the honour accorded to them.
