Background: 130 Hungarian refugees, former Freedom Fighters, marched early this morning in New York, back and forth along the pavement outside the 680 Park Avenue building of the Russian Delegation to the United Nations. It was a mute demonstration, supervised by New York Police who did not interfere with the demonstrators in any way but speedily questioned anyone happening to loiter nearby.
Chief target for the demonstrators placards was the secret trial (between July and September) of youngsters between 13 and 14 who took part in the revolt. Dr Bela Fabian, Chairman of the Federation of Hungarian Former Political Prisoners said the youngsters are to be executed as they reach 18 yrs of age, since Hungarian law forbids the execution of anyone under 18.
Father Vazul Vegvery of the Holy Ascension Church, Roebling New Jersey, said "those kids followed me because I am a priest. Feeling responsible for their fate he has offered to give himself up in exchange for the youngsters freedom. He said he was willing to stand trial for his own part in the revolt "even to the death" if the youths would be turned over to an authorized UN Committee on neutral soil.
