Background: DOUGUIA, CHAD
A holiday report in Douguia, Chad, which had been closed for over three years, re-opened on January 9. The first tourists were a group from a French wild game club, which had often visited the resort before it close due to the civil war. Chad's economy suffered badly through almost 15 years of civil war and now the government have realised the potential for earning foreign currency from tourism. The country is mostly desert and sand in the north, but towards the south, there is greater variety of scenery, and this can be seen best on safari expeditions in any of the two national parks and five game reserves. Douguia specialises in wild game safaris and visitors can see lions and leopards as well as colourful birds and antelopes. Fishing is also popular with tourists, and is a major part of Chad's economy - an economy which relies heavily on foreign aid. The resort at Douguia has 15 bedrooms, as well as a bar and restaurant, and can be accommodate up to 30 tourists at any one time.
