    Background: KOREAN COMPETITORS TOOK THE FIRST THREE PLACES IN THE DONG-A INTERNATIONAL MARATHON RACE, HELD IN SOUTH KOREA ON SUNDAY (MARCH 22).

    THE MARATHON COVERED A ROUTE FROM SEOUL, NORTH TO UIJUNGBU AND BACK TO SEOUL, A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 40 KILOMETRES (ABOUT 25 MILES) EACH WAY.

    THE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON ATTRACTED COMPETITORS FROM CANADA, JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA, BUT IT WAS LOCAL RUNNERS WHO DOMINATED THE RACE. FIRST TO CROSS THE FINISHING LINE WAS CHA-WHAN KIM OF SOUTH KOREA IN A NEW RECORD TIME OF TWO HOURS 17 MINUTES 34 SECONDS.

    SECOND AND THIRD PLACES ALSO WENT TO SOUTH KOREAN RUNNER -- KUM-YOUNG SONG, IN TWO HOURS 19 MINUTES 2 SECONDS; AND JAE - HYOUNG CHO, IN TWO HOURS 20 MINUTES 19 SECONDS.

    THE FIRST FOREIGN COMPETITOR TO FINISH WAS RONALD WALLING FORD OF CANADA, WHO CAME IN TENTH IN A TIME OF TWO HOURS 28 MINUTES 53 SECONDS.

    JAPAN'S YONESHEGE MISAO WAS FOURTEENTH IN TWO HOURS 33 MINUTES 37 SECONDS, FOLLOWED BY FELLOW-COUNTRYMAN KANE YUKI MITSUHORI WHO WAS 27 SECONDS BEHIND.

    MARATHON WINNER KIM AND THE OTHER PRIZE-WINNERS WERE PRESENTED WITH TROPHIES BY MR. JAE-WOOK KO, PRESIDENT OF LEADING SEOUL DAILY NEWSPAPER.
