Background: A total of 570 delegates from seventy countries gathered in Algiers on Monday (25 March) for the 24th International Congress of Sociologists. The conference, which will end on 30 March is being held in the ultramodern Palais des Nations -- the scene of the 4th conference of Nonaligned Nations three months ago.
The conference was called at the invitation of Algeria to study 'Development in the Third World'.
SYNOPSIS: The Palais des Nations in Algiers on Monday became the venue for the twenty fourth International Sociological Congress.
A total of five hundred and seventy university teachers and sociological researchers travelled form seventy countries to attend the congress. The conference had been convened at the request of Algeria to discuss 'Development in the Third World Countries Three months earlier, the fourth conference of Non-Aligned Nations had been held in the same building.
Among the countries attending the conference were delegates from Libya, Morocco, Mexico, Nigeria, Italy, Japan, Indonesia, India, Hungary, Congo, Algeria, France Madagascar, Spain, Greece and Jordan.
The first speech was made by the Algerian Minister of Higher Education and chairman of the conference, Mohammed Seddik Benyahia.
