Background: Now Colonel Nasser's return to Cairo at the end of his eighteen-day Russian tour. From the beflagged airport onwards he received a tremendous welcome. The main streets of the Egyptian capital were lined with crowds. Men risked their lives rushing forward to speak to him. Lines of police tried to keep people on the pavement as the Egyptian leader's open car passed under banners, strings of bunting and arches of welcome. Occasionally the onlookers mobbed the car, shouting patriotic slogans. Later, in the grounds of the Presidential Palace a huge crowd gathered to hear President Nasser speak about Middle East events and what he called imperialist plots against the Yemen. Speaking from the balcony of the palace he said of the Lebanon: "We support Lebanese independence, we do not accept any interference in Lebanese affairs, and we do not interfere.
In the Lebanon itself fighting appears to have died down in the last 24-hours, although there have been some small clashes between Government and Opposition forces.......
