Background: General Carter B. Magruder arrived in Seoul City Airport today to assume the duty of new Commander-in-Chief, United Nations Command, succeeding General George H. Decker. General Decker, present Commander-in-Chief will become the Vice Chief of Staff of US Army in Washington in July. Incoming General Magruder was welcomed by ROK Defence Minister Kim July Yul, General George H. Decker, ROK foreign Minister Cho and many other high ranking Korean and UN Forces officials in Seoul on his arrival at airport. General Magruder also reviewed ROK Armed Forces Honor Guards with Defence Minister Kin on his arrival while 18-gun salute was fired.
And General Magruder paid a courtesy call on President Syngman Rhee this morning, 29th June, with ROK Defence Minister Kim, General Decker and General Paik, Joint Chief of Staff.
In the Change of Command ceremony july 1st, Gen Magruder will officially receive Command post from Gen Decker at the UNC Headquarters in Seoul, and become the Commander-in-Chief of UNC, Commander US Forces in Korea and Commander of 8th US Army.
Out going Gen Decker who assumed present duty in July 1957 will succeed General Lemnitzer as a Vice Chief of Staff US Army in Washington.
